Growing Together, Serving All: A Look Inside St Mark Lutheran Church
Welcome to St Mark! We are a vibrant community in the heart of Yorktown Virginia, and we wanted to share a little about what we’ve been doing. Our mission is simple: we strive to unite in worship, grow in wisdom, and serve with love. As a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), we are committed to being a place where people of all ages, races, abilities, cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender identities, and life experiences are not only welcomed but celebrated.
Here is a glimpse into the life of our community.
How We Nurture the Next Generation
- Our St Mark Lutheran Church Preschool provides a wonderful, affordable, Christian-values-based education, fostering the intellectual, social, and spiritual growth of children.
- Through our powerful collaboration with Family Focus, our facilities have become a crucial hub, serving hundreds of local families with vital services like parent education and playgroups.
- We actively foster character and leadership by sponsoring Cub Scouts Pack 0595 and Scouts BSA Troop 0306, helping prepare young people for ethical and moral choices.
- The spirit of pure joy and inclusivity shines brightly in our Challenger League, a baseball program for youth with mental and physical challenges, where dedicated “buddies” ensure every player experiences the thrill of the game.
- We are committed to the arts as we proudly host a local branch of the Virginia Children’s Chorus, encouraging song and fostering new skills in our youth.
Creating a Tapestry of Community and Welcome
- Our worship services, filled with thoughtful sermons and splendid music, offer a sanctuary for spiritual connection.
- Our “Sine Nomine Presents” concert series brings the wider community together for inspiring public music and cultural events throughout the year.
- Intergenerational bonds are strengthened in our Knitter and Quilter workshops, where fellowship blossoms while creating items for veterans, the homeless, and newly baptized infants.
- We are also a proud community partner, actively facilitating American Red Cross Blood Drives and providing a venue for local events like the York High School NJROTC annual ball.
Sharing Our Heart with the World
- Locally, our PORT Ministry provides emergency winter shelter and meals for the homeless, and we actively support Natasha House, the Church Women United Food Closet, Thrive Peninsula, and Kairos Prison Ministry.
- Globally, our care reaches children at the Refugio de Los Suenos in Ecuador and a Chinese orphanage, where we have helped fund life-altering surgeries. We are also actively involved in helping the Ukrainian people and proudly support Lutheran World Relief (LWR) in its work to overcome poverty and respond to disasters.
- We remain committed advocates for social and climate justice, partnering with organizations to advance positive change in our world.
